VITA Helpers  

Catholic Charities is looking for volunteers for the 2009 tax season. Openings are available for tax preparers, greeters and clerical assistants from January through April 15. Each volunteer is asked to commit to 36 hours during the 13-week tax season. Volunteers are also needed for the group’s speaker’s bureau on a year-round basis. Santa’s Helpers  

San Antonio State Hospital needs individuals and groups on Wednesday and Thursday to assist with holiday lights and displays for patients to enjoy. Gently used holiday lights and outdoor decorations would help to make the season extra special. Also, choirs, bands, carolers and other volunteers are needed to help spread some holiday cheer by planning, funding, organizing, entertaining or hosting a holiday party for patients. Office Assistant  

The Epilepsy Foundation of Central & South Texas is looking for someone on an “as-needed” basis to help with mailings, filing and other office duties in its northeast area office. Contact Wendy Higgins at (210) 653-5353.  

Hospital Patient Advocate  

San Antonio State Hospital seeks a liaison between its patients/consumers and its treatment team. Volunteers must agree to meet for two one-hour meetings per quarter. Computer skills and some knowledge of medical and mental health terminology are helpful. Contact Lori Tellez at (210) 531-8128.  

Homeless assistance  

Christmas Under the Bridge will take place under the Interstate 35 bridge between Houston and Martin streets on Dec. 6. The event will offer homeless residents direct assistance on housing, health care, legal issues, employment, benefit enrollment, treatment and other basic needs. Ambassador for a Cause  

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center needs volunteers for its Longhorn vs. Aggie Blood Drive on Saturday to assist with setup and cleanup, give directions and serve refreshments to those donating blood. Monthly Drivers and Guides for the Blind  

Low Vision Resource Center seeks volunteers to pick up blind/visually impaired individuals and drive them to the Medical Center area for the group’s monthly meeting (third Saturday or each month, approximately four hours) and return them to their home. Must be at least 21 years of age, with transportation and auto insurance. Also, guide blind/visually impaired to the meeting room and refreshment area during these meetings. Become a Mentor  

Big Brothers Big Sisters needs volunteers 18 years or older to spend a few hours every couple of weeks with young people in such activities as baking cookies, going to the park, playing games, seeing a movie or just talking. Help Others In Transition  

Goodwill Industries needs volunteers to meet with nonviolent ex-offenders one hour a week to offer encouragement and support at a Goodwill location. Mentors assist as the ex-offenders transition back into the community by helping them develop healthy attitudes and skills and to become successful in their career and personal development. Two-hour training and ongoing in-service is provided prior to being assigned a partner.
